About

The aim of my research is to study and assess the nature of - and developments in - the style of government under the early Tudor monarchs, specifically during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. My thesis addresses the socio-political role of the gentry in implementing and administering central policy at the county level: in this case, Somerset. As one of the most important gentry families in Somerset, I shall formulate this topic in a semi-prosopographical manner through the lives and careers of the two most prominent members of the Paulet family: Sir Amias Paulet (c.1457-1538) and his son Sir Hugh (c.1500-1573). By undertaking this doctoral research, I hope to broaden our present understanding of the political and social landscape in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries - the transitional period between ‘medieval’ government and the dawn of what we consider to be the ‘Modern’ era.
